Rust-resistant ceiling dryers: choosing SS 202 or SS 304
5 min read · 12 September 2026

SS 202 can suit covered utility spaces; SS 304 is the safer choice for rain, sea breeze and exposed balconies.
Where SS 202 makes sense
SS 202 is a value choice for dry, covered utility spaces away from direct rain and coastal salt. It still needs occasional wiping, especially where detergent spray or damp clothes remain against the rod.
When to choose SS 304
SS 304 offers better corrosion resistance for open balconies and homes affected by coastal air. It is the preferred option around ECR, Palavakkam, Besant Nagar and other exposed parts of Chennai.
- Open or rain-facing balconies
- Homes near the coast
- Frequent drying of wet, heavy laundry
- Buyers prioritising lower maintenance
The complete system matters
A stainless rod alone does not protect ordinary screws or fittings. Ask what grade is used for rods and hardware, and keep the pulley area clean so grit does not cut the rope.
Simple care
Wipe the rods with fresh water and a soft cloth when salt or construction dust settles. Avoid abrasive cleaners and check the rope for fraying during routine cleaning.
Common questions
Does stainless steel ever need painting?
No. Stainless steel should be cleaned, not painted. A proper grade retains its finish without a coating that can peel onto clothes.
Is SS 304 required everywhere?
No. A sheltered inland utility area can use SS 202. SS 304 is recommended where rain, humidity or salt exposure is higher.
