On ECR, Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Neelankarai and Kovalam, airborne chloride does the damage. Tufropes HDPE and nylon netting is unaffected by salt, but the anchors, hooks, turnbuckles and clamps holding it up are steel — and that is where a coastal installation usually fails.
Why sea-facing installations fail early
Salt aerosol settles on the fixing, absorbs moisture from Chennai's high humidity and holds a permanent electrolyte film against the metal. Galvanised or SS 202 hardware can show red rust within a single season inside 1km of the shoreline.
The second failure mode is galvanic: a stainless hook bolted to an aluminium window frame without an isolating washer corrodes the aluminium instead.
The coastal specification we use
Inside 3km of the coast we quote SS 316 (marine grade) for every fastener, eye bolt, turnbuckle and thimble, with nylon isolation washers where the fixing meets aluminium, and a chemical anchor rather than an expansion plug in older brickwork.

Maintenance that actually extends life
A freshwater rinse twice a year — before and after the north-east monsoon — removes the chloride film and is the single most effective thing a coastal building can do. Combine it with a visual anchor check and a 20-minute re-tensioning.

What to ask any coastal netting vendor
Ask three questions: which stainless grade is the hardware, is the twine UV-stabilised and to what percentage, and what the anchor spacing is. A vendor who cannot answer all three in writing should not be working on a sea-facing elevation.
Frequently asked questions
Does salt air damage the net itself?
No. HDPE and nylon netting is chemically unaffected by salt. Sunlight and the steel fixings are what limit life near the coast.
Is SS 304 enough near the beach?
SS 304 is acceptable beyond roughly 3km inland. Closer to the shoreline we specify SS 316 marine grade for every fastener.
How often should coastal nets be inspected?
Twice a year — a freshwater rinse, anchor check and re-tension before and after the north-east monsoon.
