Survey the opening before quoting

Measure the clear opening, not the balcony floor. Grilles, AC brackets, drain pipes and sunshades all change the net size and the anchor line. We photograph every face of the opening so the net is cut once, on site, with a 100–150mm allowance for tensioning.

Check what the anchor will bite into: RCC beam, brick infill, aluminium window frame or cladding. Brick needs a longer sleeve anchor; cladding needs a through-bolt with a backing plate, never a plastic plug.

• Clear opening width × height, plus diagonals to confirm the frame is square
• Substrate type at all four edges
• Access route — ladder, rope access or scaffold, and whether power is available

Anchor spacing and hardware

Space SS 304 eye bolts or hooks 300–450mm apart on all four edges. Beyond 600mm the border rope starts to bow between anchors and a pigeon can push through the gap. On coastal and high-rise faces we reduce spacing to 300mm because the net sees continuous wind load.

Use stainless fasteners only. Galvanised hooks stain the wall within one Chennai monsoon and fail within two or three years on Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur and ECR-facing elevations.

Border rope and tensioning

The net is only as strong as its perimeter. We stitch a 4–6mm UV-stabilised border rope around the whole net, then lace the rope through the anchors and tension it corner-to-corner before locking off. A properly tensioned bird net deflects less than 25mm when you push it with your palm.

Tension in stages — opposite corners first, then mid-span — so the mesh stays square. Tensioning one edge fully before the others is what produces the diagonal wrinkles you see on cheap installations.

Close the small openings, not just the big one

Pigeons enter through the 50mm gap beside a duct pipe, above a sunshade, or behind an AC outdoor unit. Cut and stitch the net around pipes rather than leaving a slit, and add a separate small panel above sunshades.

For plumbing and electrical ducts, a 25mm or 40mm mesh with a rigid frame lasts far longer than a loose net tied to pipes.

Handover checks and warranty

Before we leave, the crew photographs each anchor line, tests deflection at three points, and confirms the openable window or grille still operates. The customer gets the net specification, mesh size, rope diameter and the warranty period in writing.

Annual re-tensioning takes 20 minutes and roughly doubles the practical life of the net, especially on wind-exposed floors above the 8th level.
